El Rancho Charter School’s agreement with the Orange Unified School District to operate the campus was renewed Thursday, May 25 by the school board.
Board members split 4-3 on approving the charter that has been causing controversy the last two months.
The majority adopted the charter as submitted by the school. Staff had suggested renewing the agreement as it was last approved, without the latest revisions.
Staff concerns included a lack of evidence that 75 percent of El Rancho staff had approved the charter’s revisions and that the new charter language could reduce the rights of campus employees.
In April, a lengthy back-and-forth was launched with the district when El Rancho officials said the charter had been automatically renewed according to state law. With discussions at a standstill and a deadline approaching, district staff had recommended renewing the charter without any proposed revisions, so further negotiations could be carried out going forward.
El Rancho’s renewed charter will last until 2022.
