Computer virus caused porn to pop up on Ontario teacher's computer, district says

ONTARIO >> Students in a Chaffey High School classroom were exposed to pornography when an unexpected pop-up was displayed on the smart board at the front of the class.

On Feb. 22, “while teaching a computer class, a pornographic image was displayed on the ‘Smart Screen’ display board in the classroom,” Sgt. Jeff Higbee, spokesman for the Ontario Police Department, wrote in an email Friday. “The teacher quickly shut it down. The incident was reported to OPD.”

Chaffey Joint Union High School District staff also investigated the incident.

“It was determined to be a pop-up, an accident,” Superintendent Mat Holton said. “How it got through the firewall, I have no idea.”

District staff looked into the possibility that the teacher had been using the work computer for unauthorized purposes.

“There was no evidence of intent, no evidence of additional inappropriate sites when (Information Technology employees) looked at it and no history of visiting other inappropriate sites on the computer,” Holton said. The investigation was closed.

Police believe they know why the pop-up happened.

“OPD and the Chaffey Joint Union High School Deputy District Deputy Superintendent of Personnel investigated the matter,” Higbee wrote. “It was discovered to be a computer virus.”

Staff writer Doug Saunders contributed to this story.
