No foul play suspected after body found on West Cliff and Fair Avenue

SANTA CRUZ >> Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is notifying relatives before releasing the identity of a decomposed body that washed ashore at a cove near West Cliff Drive and Fair Avenue on Thursday morning.

A witness called 911 about 9 a.m. Thursday to report a body in the cove near Fair Avenue, Santa Cruz Fire Batallion Chief Robert Young said. Firefighters and Santa Cruz police responded. Firefighters began a rescue to hoist the body up the cliff.

Police department spokeswoman Joyce Blaschke said the death is under investigation.

Sgt. Chris Clark, sheriff’s office spokesman, said foul play is not suspected.

“We’re working to notify all members of the person’s family,” Clark said. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Unit is investigating.
