May 27 Letters: Trump, Pence are trying to suppress voters

The president’s tweeted claim that three million undocumented people voted in the last presidential election is completely unfounded. There is, in fact, very little evidence of voter fraud in the United States.

Nevertheless the president has signed an executive order establishing a “Presidential Commission on Voter Integrity.” The commission’s chair is Vice President Mike Pence, and tellingly, its vice chair is Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is known for his voter suppression efforts in Kansas.

In the absence of real voter fraud, this commission might look like a delusional waste of time. But it is a blatant effort to suppress voting by people of color, immigrants and young people.

As representatives of the Westside Santa Cruz chapter of Solidarity Sundays, a nationwide feminist activist group, we are gravely concerned about reproductive rights. President Trump hasn’t yet overturned Roe v. Wade. However, he’s headed in that direction. He reinstated the global gag rule, blocked Planned Parenthood funding, and chose an anti-choice vice president.

Recently, Trump appointed two anti-abortion activists to top-level positions in the Department of Health: Charmaine Yoest has crafted significant anti-abortion legislation. Teresa Manning is opposed to contraception and the morning-after pill. They’ll be in charge of family planning coverage for millions of low-income Americans, including many women of color and women of California….
