POMONA >> A man is facing a possible sentence of 40 years to life in prison after a jury convicted him of sexually abusing a 5-year-old girl for more than a year in Pomona, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
A jury on Thursday found Fernando Rodriguez, 57, guilty of two counts of a lewd act with a child, two counts of oral copulation or sexual penetration with child 10 years old or younger and one count each of child molesting and distributing harmful matter to minor, according to a D.A.’s news release.
The abuse came to light in 2015 after the girl’s teacher learned of the ongoing molestation and called police, authorities said.
Rodriguez sexually abused the young girl between May 2013 and July 2014, Deputy District Attorney Babette Huley of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case, said in a statement.
In addition to molesting the victim, Rodriguez showed pornography to the young girl, the prosecutor added.
Pomona police began an investigation and on July 20, 2015, a warrant was issued for Rodriguez’s arrest in connection to the attacks on the girl, the release said. Ten days later, Rodriguez was found and arrested.
Authorities have not said how Rodriguez knew the girl or if they are related.
Rodriguez is scheduled to be sentenced July 12.
