'House of Cards' star Robin Wright gets political: 'Trump has stolen all of our ideas'

Fans who love tales of White House drama and political intrigue used to get their fix from “House of Cards,” the hit Netflix series about a fictional president with ego to burn and an evil grip on power.

But with the daily plot twists coming out of Washington, White House leaks, Robert Mueller’s appointment as special prosecutor of the investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 election and President Donald Trump’s “witch hunt” complaints, it seems real life is putting Hollywood writers to shame, at least in the eyes of actress Robin Wright.

“Trump has stolen all of our ideas for season six,” Wright joked Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival during a Kering Women in Motion event. “We don’t know what we’re going to do, seriously.”

The show’s upcoming fifth season already has been shot, but Wright joked that with everything happening in Washington, there may not be much ground for “House of Cards” to cover down the line.

The actress, who plays conniving first lady Claire Underwood opposite Kevin Spacey’s mercenary President Frank Underwood, has won a Golden Globe and earned multiple Emmy nominations for her work on the show.

Wright came to Cannes to debut her latest directorial effort, “The Dark of Night,” a short film she described as “a female vigilante movie set in the 1930s.”
