Workers on the Georgia Street Bridge project have unearthed street car tracks that were buried in 1949 when the system was dismantled in favor of buses. The $14 million project will lower the road bed two and a half feet to accomadate large vehicles that have collided with the arches in the past. Workers knew the rails were there and lowered the road on both sides before beginning the work of pulling up the tracks and recycling the steel. At it’s height, the San Diego Electric Railway system had 165 miles of track they turn up occasionally as major road work is done.
