SAN JOSE — Firefighters on Thursday discovered an illicit marijuana grow operation while responding to a house fire in the Evergreen neighborhood.
The fire was reported at 5 p.m. on the 3100 block of Heritage Springs Court, said San Jose fire Capt. Tim Miller.
The cause was traced to overheated wiring, said Miller, adding that the electric meter had been bypassed.
“They were essentially stealing power,” he said.
Miller said half of the two-story home was being used for the marijuana grow operation.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and turned the scene over to San Jose police. No one was at the home when authorities arrived and no arrests had been made as of Friday, said Officer Albert Morales.
The discovery of a marijuana grow house was unexpected, Miller said.
“I’m really surprised we’re seeing grow houses with the legalization of marijuana,” he said.
