Ride Muni for free this New Year’s Eve




Another year, another New Year’s Eve with free Muni service.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced its 17th year of free rides at the cusp of the new year, which will run from 8 p.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Sunday.

Muni will run extra Owl service (buses running from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.), and service on the F-Market & Wharves historic streetcar line will switch to buses from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. –– so don’t set your sights on popping any corks while riding the historic “Milan, Italy” streetcar late at night.

BART also announced its New Year’s Eve schedule, which will run standard service until 8 p.m. –– and then run what it calls “special service” the rest of the night until 3 a.m.

As part of BART’s special service for riders heading into San Francisco after 8 p.m., Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond line trains heading into San Francisco will not stop at Embarcadero Station. Montgomery Street Station is the closest exit for the fireworks show.

Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont line trains will not stop at Montgomery Street station. Millbrae and Daly City trains will stop at all San Francisco stations.

And for those leaving after the fireworks end, Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond trains will not stop at Embarcadero Station, but can be caught at Montgomery Station.
