Local Roundup: Alvarez boys basketball tops P.V. in Steinbach final

The Alvarez High boys basketball team defeated Pajaro Valley 71-66 in the championship of the Bob Steinbach Classic at North Salinas High on Friday night.

Alvarez (9-4) will open Monterey Bay League Pacific Division play at Seaside on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Ray Escobar and Jony Chavez earned all-tournament honors for the Grizzlies (8-4), who open MBL-P play at Gilroy on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Salinas 70, Greenfield 34 >> Trevor Mulhern had 13 points for the Cowboys in their win at the Steinbach Classic.

Mulhern was named to the all-tournament team for Salinas (7-5), which will open MBL Gabilan Division play against visiting Monterey on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Greenfield’s Sabian Jackson had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Arnie Acosta added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bruins (1-8), who host Anzar on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Pacific Grove 54, Seaside 50 >> Brad Sendell had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Pacific Grove in its nonleague win.

Zack Miller added 10 points, while Ian Sinclair-Fox had seven points and seven rebounds for the Breakers (7-1), who will visit Palma on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Matthew Briscoe had 15 points for Seaside, while Malik Jeter added eight. The Spartans (4-7) will open MBL-P play against visiting Alvarez on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Monta Vista 57, Soledad 55 >>Isaac Lopez had 15 points for Soledad in its loss at the Monta Vista Tournament in Cupertino.

The Aztecs (3-7) will host Greenfield in Mission Trail Athletic League play on Friday at 7 p.m.
