Local community things to know and do for the San Gabriel Valley for Jan. 1, 2016

School board applicants sought

Walnut Valley Unified School District is looking for qualified applicants to fill a vacant seat on the Board of Trustees.

The board, in accordance to Education Code Section 5091, took action on Dec. 14 to fill the seat by making a provisional appointment to be filled until the next scheduled district election.

Applications and information about the process are available on the district’s website at www.wvusd.k12.ca.us and must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. Jan. 3, via email.

Former board member Phillip Chen was elected to the 55th State Assembly District in November and resigned.

Los Angeles County

Christmas tree recycling

Los Angeles County provides curbside Christmas tree recycling for its unincorporated area residents through Jan. 14.

Residents can recycle their trees by placing them curbside on regular trash collection days. Trees over six feet should be cut in half for easier collection.

The trees will be repurposed into compost, mulch, or ground cover to help preserve other natural resources and reduce waste. Those who miss their curbside recycling dates can cut the trees into smaller pieces and place them in their green waste container.

Many cities also offer curbside pickup or provide convenient drop off locations for their residents. In general, all ornaments, including tinsel, decorations, and metal and plastic tree stands, must be removed before the trees can be left at the curb or dropped off at a collection site.
