Chico State journalism graduate dies in car accident

Merced County >> A Chico State University journalism graduate died in a car accident Dec. 23, according to the Merced County Coroner’s Office.

Eva Cuarenta, 26, studied public relations and marketing and graduated in fall 2013. While attending, she was an account executive for Tehama Group Communications and a student assistant in the journalism and public relations department computer lab, according to a Facebook post on the department page.

After graduation, Cuarenta returned to her hometown of Modesto and worked at Niagara Bottling Company in Stockton. She loved to travel, attend Giants games and explore breweries and wineries, according to an obituary published in the Modesto Bee. She was an aspiring make-up artist who was said to have a contagious love for life.

She is survived by her maternal grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers and extended family.

A viewing will be held at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery in Modesto.

Cuarenta was on her way home from Disneyland when she lost control of her Chevrolet Malibu while driving north on Highway 99 near the Plainsburg, California, overpass. She died when her car crossed the center divider and collided head-on with a GMC Suburban, according to an article in the Merced Sun-Star.
