Top weekend events: Auto show, NYE and Penguin Plunge

San Diego International Auto Show

10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Friday and Sunday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. San Diego Convention Center, 111 W. Harbor Drive, downtown San Diego. $8-$12 (free for children 6 and under when accompanied by an adult).

Car enthusiasts can indulge their habit at this annual show, with more than 400 of the newest models from 40 manufacturers, along with test driving, exotic cars, family entertainment and other interactive activities. Learn about the new technology featured in these vehicles, recent designs and watch the unveiling of more than 20 debuts and some new automobiles that haven’t made it to showrooms yet. Del Mar Lifeguard Penguin Plunge

While the season of dashing through the snow is over, swimmers can make like a penguin and dash into the chilly Pacific Ocean for the annual Penguin Plunge. Lifeguards and the community in Del Mar are invited to celebrate the new year with this quick dip in the water, but everyone has to brave the weather in their swimsuits — no wet suits allowed.
