ATHERTON – A trio of girls basketball teams from Atherton will vie for championships Friday afternoon on Day 3 of the fifth annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Eastside Prep in East Palo Alto.
Menlo School and Menlo-Atherton actually seek to defend last year’s titles in the Competitive Brackets I and II, respectively.
And in a case of déjà vu, M-A faces a rematch at 3 p.m. against Sacred Heart Prep, with both teams coached by former teammates on the Stanford women’s basketball team.
“It could potentially be fun to see them again in a championship, especially since we’re more or less from the same area,” said SHP coach Melanie Murphy, whose Gators defeated Berkeley on Thursday afternoon 60-46 in the first semifinal of the Competitive Bracket I at Menlo School, which is co-hosting the tournament. “It should be exciting stuff.”
“I get to coach against Mel,” M-A coach Markisha Coleman said. “We played at Stanford together, so it’s always fun. We’re really good friends, so it will be a good game.”
M-A booked its place in the final with a 63-41 victory over Gunn.
The Bears (8-1) jumped out to a 15-0 lead over the opening three minutes and led by double digits almost the rest of the way.
“They came out very fired up and playing together as a team,” Coleman said. “We let our lead slip a little bit, but once they were focused we’re good. Overall, everyone got in, everyone played well. So I’m excited about that.”
